Alvin takes a patient approach with his students. He's a socially-oriented coach. He opts to create a friendlier environment within the class so that students (especially the new ones) will feel comfortable learning swimming from him. Lessons doesn't always involve swimming instructions, Alvin is always interested in knowing the child better – like a friend. He will ask his students about school work, their hobbies and share his own stories and experience with them. The following are some values that Alvin practices:
- To display integrity and to truthfully inform parents about the suitability of participation and the individual's performance and thereafter, to provide appropriate advice.
- Endeavour to be original and refreshing in coaching approaches and to accommodate students according to their proficiencies hence, establishing a comprehensive learning experience for the individual.
- To nurture the bonds of friendship with and among learners thus, enhancing communication and feedback.
- Keeping class capacity small so as not to compromise safety and learning quality.
- To determine each student's ability so as to provide a suitable learning pace for the individual.
- To explain and provide adequate information to both students and parents involved.
He encourages feedback and constructive criticism, as he believes they help him improve to serve you better.

How mass comm. has helped Alvin in coaching:
As a mass comm grad, Alvin is trained to interact with people of all levels and social background. He has effective and creative verbal and non-verbal delivery skills - picked up during his training as a communication student – making learning more comprehensive for his students. And he occasionally corrects his students' verbal mistakes.

How it all started
|
|
Alvin was a primary school dropout and had been working ever since he left school. In 1999, he realized that life isn't going to get better unless he does something about it. He did. He went back to school.
He obtained his N and O levels as a private candidate and got good enough grades to gain admission into Ngee Ann Polytechnic to study Mass Communication. To fund his studies, Alvin turned to coaching swimming. Right from the start, he realized he has a potential for it. Evident by his first-time success at the Swimming Coaching course (which most coaches take two or more attempts to pass). He further underwent various coaching and aquatic courses in a bid to provide better service to his students. In the past four-and-a-half years, he has taught swimming and life-saving at various institutes and pools with a combine student number of more than a hundred.
In 2005, he graduated as the top Mass Communication and non-technological student of Ngee Ann Polytechnic (See news clip and articles). Today, Alvin is an undergraduate at the School of Business in the National University of Singapore.
In retrospect, this is what he has to say:
“I'd like to thank the various institutes, my students and importantly, their parents for their support and patronage over the years. Without you, my success might not have come to past. I look forward to providing you with good coaching in the years ahead.” |
